LA DAUPHINE

This home is one of the finest South African architectural heritage treasures, tastefully restored by architect Gabriel Fagan in the 1960's. The unique gable is set on a sturdy home that amidst a garden typical of the area complete with a large cypress tree, and with the mountains of Franschhoek as a background - it is surely one of the most photogenic Cape Dutch buildings.

HAZENDAL

This is one of the earliest Cape Dutch buildings and shows the gable in its early stages of development, with scrolls sweeping over the front of the gable and a frilly edge to the top. The thatch has unfortunately been replaced with tiles.

LABORIE

Located in Paarl this magnificent home is well placed on the top of a slope and is surrounded by large pine trees. The arched doorway distinguishes it from many of the other buildings in the style.

ALPHEN

The home has been bought out by a hotel which keeps the building lively and well maintained. The cellar building appears mysterious here behind some pin oak trees.

PETER FAULKE WINES

The gardens on the Cape Dutch farmsteads are really quite exquisite. Often they incorporated indigenous plants, with orchards and created a feeling of home in the countryside. It is the harmony of architecture and nature which is the true appeal of the style.

GARDENS AT PATER FAULKE

Stunning gardens with deciduous trees and low werf walls lead the eye toward the spectacular mountain scenery of the Helderberg. The restaurant here is a very pleasant visit for architecture enthusiates as the modern sculptures and fine cuisine at the restaurant make it all the more attractive. In the photo the corrugated iron of the roof is visible. It has become a popular move to replace the original thatch roofs with corrugated iron, because it is easy to maintain and does not catch fire the way thatch does. Surprisingly these roofs detract little from the beauty of the Cape Dutch homes.
