14. MORGENSTER



Less well-known, this early Cape Dutch homestead is situated right next to vergelegen. The gable is one of the best examples of the baroque style, with its sweeping curves and plaster bands.

15. LOURENSFORD



In contrast to the Morgenster gable, that at Lourensford is very angular. The slave bell is typical of the style. The roof has unfortantely been changed from thatch to tile at some point, presumably to reduce the threat of fire.

4. LAND EN ZEEZICHT



This graceful home finds itself in the middle of modern day Somerset West suburbs. Various modern cape dutch buildings have been built around, and have been tastefully executed.

VERGELEGEN HOUSE AND GARDENS



This is one of the top tourist attractions in the area because there is not only the historical building to see, but also the gardens that have been cultivated for centuries. The main house was painted a light mustard colour at some point, which softens the facade and enhances the connection to the gardens.

CAMPHOR TREES AT VERGELEGEN



The seven camphor trees that line the main house are more than 300 years old and have been declared a national heritage site.

THE LIBRARY
