Cape Dutch Gables - An Historical Overview
The defining feature of all Cape Dutch houses is the central gable. Originally a water-proofing feature, the gable became more and more of creative expression and even a status symbol. Beginning with the simplest gable at Joostenburg, the gables became more and more intricate as time went on. Some of the finest gables can be found at La Dauphone, Morgenster and Vredenberg wine farms.
EARLY GABLES
The early gables were in simple "cloud" formations, with all the curves in the convex direction. The best preserved example is at Joostenberg.
BAROQUE
The baroque style started to develop with convex and concave shapes now present in the gables. Plasterwork started to become eleaborate and would sweep over the gables in swirling motions.
There is less tendency for the edgings to continue over the face of the gable, which occurs less in the neoclassical period. Examples include the manor homes at Morgenster, Webersberg and Vergelegen.

NEOCLASSICAL
Gables of this period are very carefully designed with more emphasis on verticle elements, columns, pillasters etc. Horns and lace edges on the gables became more interesting and unique, moving away from the "holbol" rounded gables. The use of urns on outer edges of the gables became popular. Examples include the gables at Neethlingshof, La Dauphine and Rustenburg.
